Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a form of artificial insemination that helps give sperm a head start in fertilization. IUI can help increase the number of sperm that reach the uterus and fallopian tubes. Intrauterine insemination is often used when a male has a low sperm count and/or decreased sperm mobility.

During intrauterine insemination, sperm are washed and then placed inside the uterus with a small catheter. Timing is important. This needs to be done when the woman’s ovaries release one or more eggs.

Ovulation-inducing medications can help a woman have multiple eggs before intrauterine insemination. IUI can also help women who have infertility-related endometriosis (when tissue improperly grows outside the uterus).

If a male has a below-average sperm concentration, IUI preparation can help separate normal sperm from low quality sperm. The stronger sperm are then placed in the female’s uterus.

Some women have cervical mucus that is too thick, which makes it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus. Scarring from surgery or biopsies can cause the cervix mucus to thicken. IUI can carry sperm past the cervix and deposit sperm directly into the uterus where the egg(s) waits to be fertilized.

There are times when a woman is actually allergic to the proteins in a man’s semen. This allergic reaction can cause burning and swelling in her reproductive organs. The good news is many of the proteins in semen can be removed by IUI preparation before the sperm is deposited in the uterus.

Intrauterine insemination is usually performed close to when a woman begins ovulation. Women can tell when they are ovulating with an at-home urine ovulation predictor kit and/or a transvaginal ultrasound used by a doctor. A woman may be given human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) or similar hormones to make her ovulate at the right time.
